A hard worker is a good worker

An animatronic dummy helps an army officer control traffic at an intersection in Sokcho, South Korea.I am feeling the first signs of getting sick right now and all i can think about is how much i'm told Korean workers are praised for working through sickness. My colleague, Josh, mentioned to me, on the way to Korea, that you'll get positive vibes from the boss if you're seen at work fighting through a cold. He cited a previous situation to support his statement. And, i was quick to believe him, but skeptical about the productivity gained from such an attitude.

I really just hope i don't have to deal with prolonged sickness while i'm here. Yelling at kids all day is hard enough with a healthy throat.

I live in a fishing town

A street vendor sells fish shaped pastries with red bean filling from a corner near my apartment in Sokcho, South Korea.

Sardines on a rope are sold at the entrance of the Jungang Market in downtown Sokcho, South Korea.

Soldiers spend their day off shopping together on Sunday in downtown Sokcho. They walk past a monument to the fishermen who define this port town.

A seagull waits for scraps on the mast of a fishing boat on Cheongchoho Lake, Sokcho.

Experience is everything

As a photojournalist, I am trusted to be the eyes of the public. I am asked to attend events and witness the important parts. I am told to capture/compliment the reality of a newsworthy situation in a picture frame.

To make better judgements on what is important, what is not important, and what is real, a photojournalist/journalist should have lots of experience in life, be it having worked in government, entertainment, sports, etc....

I am currently taking one year to experience a new country (Korea), and a new profession (teaching).

Prior to my arrival in Korea, most of the people I'd spoken to said they knew someone who'd gone to Korea to teach—and loved it; and yet, I had never spoken face to face with a person who had done it themselves.

I certainly have intentions to shoot pictures while here, but my top priority is to become a really good teacher. I am approaching this year as a learning experience, and a test for my ability to adapt to a new everything.

I am happy to report that I have landed in a great city, with a wonderful school and some excellent teacher colleagues. Sokcho, South Korea, is my current home, and I am very proud of it. I wll post photos from time to time. This blog will keep everyone clear about what's happening in my life. New experiences are virtues, especially if the experiences are challenging.
